Moving can be very stressful. Not only do you have to pack up your house, you also have to find a way to transport all of your household items and unpack and organize your new home. There are so many things you need to do, and not enough time to do it. Make your move easier and less stressful with these tips.

Plan Your Move

The first step to planning a successful move is to decide how you will transport your household items from one location to another. Decide if you are going to use a moving company or if you will do it yourself. No matter which option you choose, schedule the move day. If you are going to use a full-service moving company, they will need to know when to come to pack up your house. If you are going to do everything yourself, you will need to schedule the use of a moving vehicle. Whether you are looking for New York movers, or a moving company in another city, this is something to consider.

Collect Boxes

Since you are packing up an entire household, you will need to start collecting boxes early. You can purchase boxes through a moving company, or you can see if your workplace or friends have any extra boxes that you can use instead. While you’re collecting your boxes, try to find different sizes, as well as packing material for your glass and fragile items.

Go Through Your Things

Before you start packing, go through your closets and basement or attic. If you haven’t used something within the last year, consider getting rid of it. Anything you don’t need to pack will save you time and money. You can get rid of those unused items by having a yard sale, or if you don’t want to deal with the hassle, you can donate them to a charity. Don’t forget that you can claim donations on your taxes next April.

Plan Your Packing

Packing is the name of the game when it comes to moving. How you pack will determine how your move will go. To make yourself ready for your move, start packing ahead of time. Pack any non-essential items first. As the move gets closer, you can start packing other items, saving critical items for last. To make unpacking easier, get a copy of the floor plans of your new house and plan the setup. This way, when you’re packing boxes, you’ll be able to group things that will go together in the new home, which will also make unpacking much easier.

Many New York movers, as well as movers wherever you live can help you with some of the items on the list.  For example, some will provide boxes or handle packing and unpacking.  Before choosing, do you homework and decide with moving company will work best for your specific needs.
