A great number of businesses never really bother with legal representation unless a specific situation requires them to enlist the services of a lawyer. It is, however, important to find a lawyer before you find yourself in actual need of one so that you can build a relationship and consequently ensure that they are in the best position to help you when needed.

If you are looking for a lawyer to help you with any legal matter related to your business, it can be quite helpful to ask your colleagues or business partners to recommend you one. Almost every small business require general legal assistance for example - formulating contracts, business expansion plans and other aspects that require legal help. Business owners in most cases approach their lawyer whenever the need arises.

With the recommendations given to you, all you need to do is go through the list and find a number of lawyers that are more qualified to handle small business needs. Usually lawyers will have knowledge on general legal issues when it comes to business but it would be best to find those that have an inclination to small businesses in particular.

With a short list of lawyers who specifically handle small business matters the next course of action is to interview each one of them. The idea here is to find out the one that can establish a great working relationship from the very beginning. When you first meet up with a lawyer you will need to discuss your needs, the costs associated with the various services that the lawyer will provide and exactly how the lawyer will go about dealing with different matters related to your business. It is always best to interview a number of lawyers as opposed to interviewing only one. Doing so will get a better and more objective perspective about who is the best person for the job.

Sometimes there will be some delicate situations and your lawyer may not have the capability to deal with certain legal issues related to your business. In cases like that, you can be sure that he/she will recommend to you the best person for the job. It can be a tech solicitor, ip or a trademark lawyer.

It is also a good idea to look into the issue of cost when thinking about enlisting the services of a lawyer. However, this is not the most important aspect when you need some certain problem to be solved urgently. What you need to do is discuss the manner in which you will be charged; is it on a retainer basis, hourly basis etcetera.
